Almost pulled from the cast, this performer is doing just fine.

I almost pulled this plant out of the ground.

I didn’t know what it was. It had shown up between two rocks, uninvited, in damp soil near the patio. I remember kneeling down, looking at the leaves, thinking—
I hope you’re a good weed.

I didn’t pull it.

This Spring morning, that same plant—now a 7-foot elderberry—was glowing.
